Drupal 7, Drupal 8, Drupal 9 or Drupal 10?
From 7 to 9
Drupal 7 (D7) is moving towards end-of-life. In January 2025, Drupal will stop its support of D7. What does this mean? Your website will no longer be secure, there will be no more updates, and you run the risk of security breaches with far-reaching consequences. Need to stay on Drupal 7 for a little while longer? We offer Drupal 7 support.
Dropsolid offers Drupal 7 support until 8 december 2025
More about our Drupal 7 support
From 8 to 9
Drupal 8 (D8) also has an end-of-life date on the horizon: 2 November 2021. That’s when the support of the underlying Symfony platform ends, increasing risk for your platform.
Preparation is the key to success
Since the transition from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 requires less than a Drupal 7 migration, there is no need to panic. However, you should consider all your options and draw up a migration plan. The switch also gives you the chance to take your platforms to the next level, not just complete a simple version upgrade. Drupal 9 is much more than a CMS: it’s a true Digital Experience Platform (DXP).
Exclusive Drupal 7 Support
On January 5th, 2025, Drupal will officially stop supporting Drupal 7. That means no more community-based updates such as bug fixes, new features, or security updates. Do you still have a D7 website that needs to stay online longer? If so, we'd be happy to help you out. At the moment Dropsolid supports Drupal 7 until 8th december 2025 (almost 1 year longer than the community)
- We discuss your case personally and together draw up a future vision for your website.
- We make an action plan based on your wishes and needs: the Drupal 7 Maintenance Plan.
- We execute the action plan with PHP and Drupal 7 updates.
The consequences of an outdated platform
Is a website upgrade really necessary? The short answer: yes. An up-to-date platform means a secure platform – an absolute must-have. But there is good news: things are moving in a positive direction. While the work involved in a D7 migration is relatively substantial, a D8 migration is significantly easier. For the launch of D8, faster, smaller updates were implemented, making future upgrades easier. This, in turn, enables you to use new features from later versions more quickly.
When to take action?
As soon as possible. The right preparation helps you on your way. Choose the option that fits your organization best:
- Migrating your existing website as soon as possible.
- Building a fresh platform.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose to keep using Drupal 7?
You can – your website will keep working. Just bear in mind that your website will no longer comply with the latest security requirements, and that Drupal will no longer support your current version. If you opt for our Drupal 7 Maintenance Plant, your D7 website will remain secure until you're ready to migrate to a newer Druapl version.
Can I migrate from D7 to D9 or D10 without moving to D8 first?
This is absolutely possible. We do suggest taking the opportunity to reconsider your website. Drupal 9 offers a whole new set of ways to maintain your website more efficiently. Example? Layout Builder.
Today’s technology is moving very fast. Avoid legacy technology issues for your new website and elect to migrate relevant content to your new website.
How about external components, like PHP and Symfony?
PHP and Symfony keep evolving. It’s up to Drupal to stay compatible with version updates that support these underlying technologies. Just like Drupal, PHP and Symfony have their own security support periods.
Will my existing Drupal 7 or Drupal 8 website keep working if I don’t update?
Yes, your website will remain online. But you will no longer be able to enjoy the required security updates, which might impact your website.
What does the Drupal 7 Maintenance Plan entail?
The Drupal 7 Maintenance Plan gives your organization enough of time to take additional measures for a transition to a fully-fledged Digital Experience Platform in Drupal 9 or higher.
Does Drupal 8 long-term support exist?
There is no extended support for Drupal 8, because D8 is easy to update to D9 – unlike migrations of previous Drupal versions. Drupal 8 relies on small, fast and incremental updates, making the transition to a later version easier.
Can I use custom Drupal 7 modules in Drupal 9 or higher?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. The underlying Drupal features have evolved and code needs to be ported to be compatible with later versions. This is a good opportunity to check the functionality of your custom D7 code and verify whether the required features are available through contributed modules for Drupal 9.
When should I expect a new major Drupal update?
You can find all the latest info about Drupal on this page at Drupal.org. The end-of-life date for Drupal 9 is planned for November 2023, coinciding with the end-of-life date of the underlying Symfony framework.
